Zalul Association demands: A new hearing regarding the sludge spillage permit for the Shafdan
The most recent report that the Shafdan submitted to the Permit Committee on 10.7.06 shows that the incinerator will not be completed until 2010

Contrary to the Shafdan committed to finishing the incinerator project by 2008, the most recent report updating the Permit Committee shows that the project will only be completed by 2010 – nearly a year and a half later that what was reported  six months previously!

Yariv Abramovich, Director of Zalul, explains that this is concrete, written proof of the Shafdan’s web of lies and deceit.  For many years, the Shafdan created an illusion that led the public and the local and national authorities to believe that they are planning a solution to remove the sludge from the sea – however, in reality, they have no desire to come to any sort of solution.  Abramovich appealed to the Minister of Environment and to the Permit Committee in a request that a new hearing be held to reconsider the Shafdan’s permit.

In December 2005, the Shafdan received a permit for a year based on the promises that the spillage of sludge into the sea will end by July 2008.  It is preposterous that only a few months later, the Shafdan’s management is requesting a year and a half extension for the completion of the project.

For years, the Shafdan’s management approached the Permit Committee requesting new permits each time based on different plans and excuses – meanwhile, polluting the Mediterranean Sea with poisonous sludge.

Zalul Association is managing a campaign to stop the sludge spillage into the sea in the fastest and most effective way.  According to Zalul, there are several feasible, environmental and economical solutions that would enable the Shafdan to stop the sea pollution in one year’s time!

Yariv Abramovich further explains: “The Shafdan chose to ignore the warnings that the timelines are unrealistic and that public opposition and planning procedures are likely to delay the project even more.  An alternative solution need to be decided on and executed now, particularly in light of the timeline that was promised to the public.  We must refer to this July 2008 deadline as “holy” and do all that’s possible to adhere to it.”
