Zalul in the Community: Bat-Yam Beach Clean-Up and “Tikkun Hayam”
On Monday, July 7, Zalul and the Bat Yam Municipality Beach Division held a beach clean up on Bat Yam's Selah Beach with 100 teens from the NFTY Tikkun Olam Israel program and the Seminar in Israel program.
It is always inspiring to see these youth come from abroad to clean up Israel's beaches. The Bat Yam beach staff were especially moved and not only gave the teens free slushies as a sweet treat for their hard work but also made an announcement over the lifeguard loudspeaker to beach goers about how wonderful it was that these teens came to help out. "We can all learn from these youth" the lifeguards announced, "they are setting an example for us all. They come all the way from America to clean the beaches. We should be helping them too." We like to call that tikkun hayam.
Thanks to their hard work, over 60 bags of garbage were collected. Zalul and the Bat Yam Beach Division plan to continue to work together throughout the summer doing beach clean-ups and educating the public about the need to keep the beaches clean, clear and safe for swimming.
