Zalul exclaimed in a letter to the Mayor of Herzliya, Yael German, "Herzilya's sewage treatment plant, by discharging their effluent to the sea, is responsible for the pollution that has closed Tel Aviv's Tzook Beach."

Representatives from the Ministry of Health informed Zalul that the beaches in south Herzliya and north Tel Aviv were closed due to the flow of partially-treated sewage into the sea from the Herzliya municipality, combined with the natural changes of currents brought about by the weather.

Several days ago, Mayor Yael German's lawyers demanded from Zalul to stop all the publicity about the pollution in Herzliya, or that they will sue the organization again. Germen also called upon the leading local and national newspapers and tried to persuade them to stop writing articles about the pollution in Herzliya as well as spread rumors about Zalul's actions.

For many years, the Herzliya municipality spilled great quantities of sewage from its sewage treatment facility into what is called "the great hole", an informal and unauthorized site for sewage spillage. The large concentrations of sewage contaminated the land and the aquifer below, and there is a serious threat that the city's drinking water is also contaminated.

These were some of the words of Yariv Abramovich, Director of Zalul Association, after the court verdict came in and revealed Zalul as the clear winner of the slander lawsuit the Herzliya municipality submitted against the organization.

Against its previous claims, and after an aggressive battle, the Herzliya municipality accepted Zalul’s position. Partially treated sewage can no longer flow into the sea and the old sewage treatment facility must be upgraded as soon as possible.

Zalul Organization began its new campaign no 4/8/05 with a creatively designed van that will travel through all hours through the streets of Herzliya with the clear message to stop sea pollution.

After an aggressive campaign that lasted nearly a year which Zalul led with the residents of Herzliya, on the 27th of June, the Permit Committee of Spillage to the Sea accepted Zalul's position and did not renew the permit for Herzliya to spill its partially treated sewage to the sea.

As a result of many concerned phone calls from Herzliya residents and a survey conducted by the organization, Zalul began, on the 23rd of May, a major cooperation with the city's residents in a balcony sign campaign in anticipation of the forthcoming meeting of the Permit Committee of Spillage to the Sea.

The Herzliya municipality spills between six and seven million meters cubed of partially treated sewage into the Mediterranean. The Sewage is spilled through a pipe south of the marina, which stretched 600 meters into the sea.

This fact is just one of the reasons the a group of students from the Lauder School of Government in the Interdisciplinary Center chose the topic "Sewage Spillage in the Beaches of Herzliya" as their final project.
